The Best New Mixes Streaming Right Now

Today being the last day of May, we're proud to supply you with a list of our favorite mixes from the last two weeks; containing more than enough tunes to take you part way through June. And if this is the first time you've encountered our list of The Best Mixes Streaming Right Now, let us explain how we do things around here.

Simply, we've spent time and effort to browse beyond imagination in order to bring you a balanced blend of mixes that you need to hear. Fitting that criteria this time round, we've included Björk's mind-bending birthday set for Tri Angle Records, a bumping hip-hop mix from Drake's dude Eric Dingus, plus solid gold goodness from OG's like Prefuse 73, Oneman, and AG Cook, topped off with a special bonus bonanza from an all-time great.

1.

2. Oneman: Summer Mix 2015

Better known as Oneman, Streatham-bred DJ Steve Bishop has served up mix for enjoyment in the sunshine whilst you sip on something alcoholic. If you've heard previous efforts from the man on his Solitaire mix series, or have your radio dial set to Rinse FM for his regular slots, you'll know to expect generous helpings of hip-hop, house, grime, and a clutch of club-minded bootlegs from the best producers out.

3. Eric Dingus: HAW2 Mixtape

October's Very Own very own Eric Dingus done did it again, following up his fantastic HAW Mixtape which was released last year with a sequel in the form of the HAW2 Mixtape.

Unsurprisingly the newest installment features material from Drake, but there's a whole load more of blunted hip-hop, some rousing R&B, and some straight 808 rollers for you to be getting on with whilst waiting for A Warning To A Future Man, his new solo project due for release in June.

4. Björk: Tri Angle Records Birthday DJ Set

What do you give a record label for their birthday? The answer in this case is over an hour long in length, and includes music from Death Grips, Kate Bush, Jeremih and more.

There's no need to reiterate how much of a badass Björk is, and for Tri Angle Records' 5th birthday she strung together a bunch of bass-heavy belters punctuated by a couple of peculiar breakdowns—the result is a gift for which a receipt is absolutely not necessary.

Written in her inimitable tone, she added a personal message alongside the mix which read:

"I would like to wish Tri Angle label an incredibly sublime birthday and thank for having been invited to DJ at their party. Couldn't possibly been more honoured than to play in that company!!! The mix I played was my present to them: merging together some of my fav beats last year with some of my fav vocalists doing some of their best songs !!! this is my tune-tinder !!! Warmthness, Björk"

5. Prefuse 73: FACT Mix #496

For their 496th instalment of their ever-impressive mix series, Fact magazine found a place for Prefuse 73 on their scheduled programming and it's fair to say that the prolific purveyor of peculiar hip-hop did them proud. One of Guillermo Scott Herren's various pseudonyms, Prefuse 73 was responsible for the solid tracklist we have going on here, including music from contemporaries like Flying Lotus, Drew Lustman, Obey City, Lapalux, and of course the man himself.

6. AG Cook: Boiler Room SXSW DJ Set

Whilst PC Music's hyperpop sound might be a bit too intense for some people to compute, none of those people were at the label's showcase during this year's SXSW festival, wherein label boss AG Cook cooked up a special, fantastically frenetic mix for everyone who made it down.

And even though the mix was posted a month or so after the event, this thing is so futuristic it'd puzzle the fuck out of Marty McFly. Expect warped warbling over unrelenting beats punctuated by bemusing breakdowns. If the music scene was a bus, AG Cook is the guy playing bootleg tracks off of his Walkman phone louder than anyone needs to hear them.

7. Fort Romeau: FADER Mix

Formerly the keyboardist for La Roux, Fort Romeau has forged a recognisable palette of his own, and recently released his impressive second album Insides via Ghostly. More recently however, he recorded a mix on the fly for the fine people at FADER, as well as sharing a few words about books, surroundings, vegetarianism, and more pertinently, the mix.

"I recorded it just before leaving for Movement Festival so it was just the records I was packing to take with me. I like to record these mixes live and with very little planning. I find it far more interesting trying to capture the moment than laboriously piecing something together on the computer."

The result features music from Roy Davis Jr, DJ Sprinkles, Soundstream and The Black Madonna, in and amongst a blend of laid-back house jams.

8. Glenn Astro & Muff Deep: Upfront Mix #25 for Boiler Room

Despite distractions from their friend Max Graef, the co-founders of Copenhagen's Tartelet Records constructed a mix for Boiler Room's Upfront series to showcase the cream of the label's current crop. Known for their soul-infused house stylings, Glenn Astro and Emil Margetli Nyholm aka Muff Deep got together to lay down some grooves on a warm day whilst eating watermelon.

"Glenn and I compiled this mix on a sunny afternoon while eating crisps and watermelon. Max dropped by and was farting in the background all the way through, making it almost unbearable to be in the room. The mix consists of unreleased and upcoming material from Tartelet & [Max and Glenn's new label] Money $ex with a few tracks from unrelated artists and labels. You’ll find tracks by Glenn Astro, Alex Seidel aka Techno Axel, Hulk Hodn, IMYRMIND, Nu Guinea, Vivian International, Dego & Kaidi, CTEPEO ‘57 and of course Eazy E. I like Eazy E, he reminds me of a mouthy childhood friend who always got into trouble with the older kids."

If you like what you hear, make sure you don't sleep on Glenn Astro's Throwback LP, out now on (you guessed it) Tartelet Records.

9. Cookin Soul: The Lost Tapes 1.5 / Nas Instrumentals

Need some background music for your BBQ? Something to bump while you're laying in the park enjoying in the sun. Cookin Soul has got your back with nearly an hour's worth of laid back beats, an instrumental version of his Nas x Cookin Soul - Lost Tapes 1.5 mixtape from 2010.

10. Pearson Sound & Laksa: Hessle Audio Podcast on Rinse FM

For the second time this month, the man known as Pearson sound has played the right selection of music to place him on this particular list of particularly good mixes. Whilst the last effort which found it's way into our top ten was for Beats in Space, this time it's a team effort between the man also known as Dave Kennedy and Laksa, which was broadcast a little over ten days ago on London's Rinse FM. Visceral, atmospheric tracks quickly turn towards rowdier territory, and then back through various permutations of pulsating house and electronica.

11. DJ Premier: WBLS Thunder Storm Volumes 1 - 6 (via Random Rap Radio)

To finish off our latest list, please give it up for hip hop royalty—the one and only DJ Premier.

If you're willingly ignorant or aren't sure about who DJ Premier is, we suggest you listen back to basically any big name in hip hop that has made music between 1990 and now i.e. Gang Starr, Jay Z, Mobb Deep, KRS One, Nas, Biggie, D'Angelo, and Mos Def, and give thanks to the genius that he is.

Rather than sharing something new from DJ Premier, we had to include this selection of six sets ripped and re-uploaded from his residency for WBLS 107.5 recorded between 1992 and 1994, courtesy of Random Rap Radio.

"Apart from the fact that there are a few repeat listens of a handful of tunes over the 6 volumes, there is very little else to say about this playlist. All you need to do is listen, and maybe reach for a neckbrace."
