Keith Richards has been on a bit of a path of destruction as of late, throwing out inflammatory comments about some beloved music. After calling Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band “rubbish,” he’s come out and completely dismissed hip-hop, as well as Metallica and Black Sabbath. He referred to the two legendary heavy metal acts as “great jokes,” and called fans of hip-hop “tone-deaf” in a new interview with New York Daily News

“Millions are in love with Metallica and Black Sabbath,” Richards admitted, before writing off the bands completely, by saying he never took them all that seriously. Seemingly shaking his disgruntled fist at the entire modern music industry in the interview, he continued to dig himself a hole, saying “What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there.” Further explaining his distaste for the genre, he said “All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy.”

As if determined to provoke a further reaction, the 71-year-old rock legend summed up hip-hop in general with this eloquent little descriptor: “Rap—so many words, so little said.” In the interview Richards paints himself as just a little out-of-touch, and a little annoyed that not everyone is making standard rock music anymore.
