Gaspar Noé is an Argentinian director known for his provocative movies Irréversible and Enter the Void, the latter of which gained attention for its bold visual flair and unique style. The opening sequence to 2009’s Enter the Void is pretty distinct to say the least, but its style has popped up somewhere else, too. Back in 2011, Tom Kan, the graphic designer behind the striking opening credits to Enter the Void alleged that Kanye West and Hype Williams had plagiarized his work for the film, and now the Gaspar Noé is making the same assertion.
During the promotional tour for his daring new movie Love, Gaspar Noé talked with The Daily Beast and agreed that Hype Williams’ video for “All of the Lights” stole from Enter the Void. Speaking about the video, he said, “I was more shocked by the fact that that guy who copied all the typography of my titles put his name in it—Hype Williams—when you never usually see a director’s name in a music video.”
During the interview he said he was surprised that Kanye copied the title sequence from the film, reiterating that neither Kanye or Williams contacted him about the video, only learning about the similarities after the video’s release. “The truth is that when you put something out there, if you put any idea out there that’s kind of flashy, you have many, many people that are going to be copying it,” he says of the experience, adding, “This happens whether you do movies, paintings, or music.”
