Just last week we reported on why Drake’s memed to death single “Hotline Bling” wouldn’t reach the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, and one of the biggest reasons we listed was Adele’s dramatic new single “Hello.” The video for “Hello” is sitting shy of 200 million views at the time of writing, but the song has debuted at No. 1 on the chart not because of the streams, but because of the astronomically huge download figures.

Adele has set a new record for first week downloads in the US with “Hello,” with the track receiving 1.11 million downloads during its first week. Combined with the huge amount of YouTube plays, it’s no surprise Adele’s latest has shot to the top of the charts. Justin Bieber’s apologetic new single “Sorry” debuted at No. 2, while Drake’s “Hotline Bling” has dropped to No. 3. With Adele’s upcoming album 25 rapidly approaching, it looks like Adele won’t be budging from the charts anytime soon.

The surprising news about Adele’s “Hello” reaching the top of the Hot 100, though, is the fact that this is her first ever song to debut at No. 1. While she’s had a No. 1 in the US before, this is the first time one of her songs has sat at the top of the Hot 100 since its release.
