A$AP Rocky Speaks on the Passing of A$AP Yams

It’s been a busy week for A$AP Rocky. Just yesterday, on the third day of the Sundance Film Festival, Rocky was attending the premiere of Dope, a film in which he makes his proper acting debut. He was set to perform at the premiere’s after-party, but he abruptly left after performing only two songs. Dedicating his second and final song of the night to the recently deceased A$AP Yams, Rocky said “That performance—that was to stop me from crying.”

Speaking with Billboard after the performance, the “worn-out” Rocky was clearly not focused on what should be a celebratory event for him. “I had to address it, because the whole time I was rapping and I wasn’t into it, which is sad, but I just gotta keep it real. I can’t front. It’s even harder knowing that I gotta fly out in less than an hour just to go bury him. That’s the part that eats at me.”

Rocky explained that  the timing on this couldn’t be worse for the always-busy rapper, saying that first and foremost he just has to “get it together.” Not only has he been spending time at Sundance to promote Dope, but he’s also been at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. Although Rocky appears to be staying strong, explaining that he’s “a happy spirit man,” and that “time heals.”

He also took the time to back-up A$AP Ant’s statement about Yams’ death not being drug-related, saying “he didn’t overdose on any drugs—I feel like people feel that way because that’s all he’s in pictures doing. When you see A$AP Yams you see Hennessey or purple drink, you see some type of controlled substance or illegal narcotic.”

Rocky also revealed that Yams is co-executive producer of his upcoming second studio album, alongside the always-reliable Dangermouse. He says that the album is “basically done. I finished it right before Yams Passed away.” The album is expected to arrive sometime later this year. “Yams manifested his powers into it,” said Rocky.
