Police have a arrested a 15-year-old boy from Fresno, California after he posted an Instagram that included lyrics from Eminem’s song “I’m Back.” San Joaquin Memorial High School higher ups notified local police of the boy’s Instagram, and classes were canceled at both San Joaquin as well as St. Anthony’s Catholic school, where he had previously been a student.
The track “I’m Back” from the Marshall Mathers LP references the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, and the Instagram post used these lines from the song in particular: “I take seven kids from Columbine, stand ’em all in a line, add an AK-47, a revolver, a nine, a MAC-11 and it oughtta solve the problem of mine. And that’s a whole school of bullies shot up all at one time. I’m just like Shady and just as crazy as the world was over this whole Y2K thing.”
The Fresno Bee reports that the 15-year-old has been charged on account of making terrorist threats and disrupting school activity. Fresno’s police chief Jerry Dyer claimed that detectives involved with the case “have every reason to believe that there was potential for a threat to be carried out.” He went on to describe the student as a “loner” and “socially awkward,” claiming that he shared traits with past school shooters in that sense. More alarming, however, is that the local police investigated the boy’s home, where they found several guns, ammunition, and a bulletproof vest.
Just last week, Tyler, The Creator was told that his work “fosters hatred with views that seek to provoke others to terrorist acts,” and that he would be banned from the UK for three to five years. Eminem, whose lyrics frequently go further than Tyler’s is still allowed in the UK despite Tyler’s ban.
