In 1996, a little number by the name of “My Boo” debuted on Billboard‘s Hot R&B Airplay chart thanks to positive radio reception. Ghost Town DJs’ addicting, dance floor-approved track enjoyed moderate success before the song slipped into the land of largely forgotten hits.
The occasional reference or interpolation—Ciara’s 2013 single “Body Party,” for instance, a Top 40 success—would result in “My Boo” resurfacing every now and again. This year, however, it’s sticking around. The Running Man Challenge is the latest (and greatest?) dance craze to sweep the States and beyond. In the weeks since it fully ignited into a nationwide phenomenon, “My Boo” returned to and steadily ascended the charts.
20 years after its debut, the song surpassed its previous best chart position. The newly instated classic just peaked at No. 14 on Billboard‘s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart—no small feat.
