Three days ago, Post Malone made headlines without doing or saying a thing. XXL had revealed its annual “Freshman” cover and the rising star’s absence sparked a storm online. Vanessa Satten, the magazine’s editor-in-chief, visited The Breakfast Club that same morning to discuss the selections. She called Malone’s nonattendance an artistic choice that reflected his forthcoming direction: less hip-hop.
Unhappy with the explanation, the subject of discussion took it upon himself to post an Instagram note and offer his side of the story. Post said his declination was nothing more than the result of exhaustion. Sensible, given his lengthy tour run with Justin Bieber. As for the accusation that he’s disinterested in rap, he had this to say: “I have never once said that ‘I’m not going to make hip hop anymore’ … I have a hip hop album coming out in August. I made a HIP HOP mixtape promoting my HIP HOP album.”
