Watch Kendrick Lamar's Producer Axlfolie Reflect On "Cartoon & Cereal," "m.A.A.d city"

Production outfit THC’s involvement in Kendrick Lamar’s career is arguably paramount to his trajectory. Along with Digi+Phonics, TDE’s in-house production team crafted pivotal songs ranging from “Fuck Your Ethnicity” to “Cartoon & Cereal,” along with material for the likes of Dom Kennedy, Drake, and ScHoolboy Q.

Axlfolie—one-third of the supergroup—sat down with Revolt TV to reflect on meeting Lamar and making the music behind some of our favorite tracks. He was instrumental in carving a distinct sound for Lamar’s 2011 album, Section.80.

“First time I met him, he came to the Sky Box,” he remembers. “That’s when me and Rick [Bricks, another member of the team] had a penthouse in LA. It was like Gotham City every f*cking night. I just remember this group of people walk upstairs. It’s like, ‘Yo, this is Kendrick Lamar. I was like, ‘Yeah, fo’sho man. Yeah you rap, fo’sho bro. Just rap on this beat, I’m about to go to sleep. Um. This n*gga rapped on the beat! And uh, I woke up out of my sleep and I was like, ‘What in the hell?’ And I just walked upstairs, I’m looking at him, and I just give him a hug [Laughs].”
