For many of us, it’s very easy to write down a list of all of the negative things you might think about yourself. When there aren’t enough examples in the media of people who represent you, it can seem like your differences aren’t admired or that you don’t matter at all. Tangina Stone’s emotional new single “Matter” is a direct message to anyone who may feel invisible or silenced.

As a woman of color who openly identifies as a lesbian, Tangina Stone—a Canton, Ohio native and now Brooklyn-based singer—takes a moment to speak to people who may not have someone to assure them that they matter. Stone’s new single “Matter” is an extremely vulnerable look in the mirror. As she admits, “I don’t feel like I matter” and questions “Why can’t I matter too?” these thoughts speak for millions of people. By exposing her own uncertainties, Stone lets listeners know they aren’t alone with these feelings.

“‘Matter’ is a song that I wrote in an attempt to heal or at the very least vent, about all of the pain and anger that I feel about the current social and political climate of this country and the world overall,” Stone explains. “I wrote the song at 4AM after getting back to New York from the Women's March in Washington D.C. I was pissed. Emotional. Overwhelmed and empowered. I had questions. So I asked them on this song. I hope that others who hear it, and feel the same will also be empowered and inspired to make change.”

If you’re in the New York area, check Tangina Stone out live at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn on Sunday, May 7. Get tickets here.
