Spotify May Let Artists Stream Releases for Paying Subscribers Only

Spotify may have found a new solution for artists withholding their music.

Although music streaming services have become seemingly unavoidable these days, some artists continue to fight for their right to keep their music off of these services. Adele—whose recent album 25 is not available on any streaming services—recently admitted that streaming “probably is the future, but, eh.”  She has joined the short list of artists like Taylor Swift, Prince, and a few others who have made strong oppositions towards streaming services such as Spotify.

While several music services continue to search for ways to compromise with artists, it appears that Spotify may have found a new solution. According to the Wall Street Journal, Spotify is considering giving artists the option to stream their albums only to paying subscribers.

Apparently Spotify is not ready to completely change their policies just yet, but they are willing to test out this strategy, in hopes that it won’t have too big of an affect on the usage from free subscribers. However, Spotify has yet to decide which artists will be allowed to withhold their music from free users. It will be interesting to see how this plays out for everyone involved.
