Jermaine Dupri has had an eventful career as a rapper, producer, record executive, and all-round hip-hop mogul. And according to Dupri himself, he played a bigger role in moving Atlanta hip-hop culture forward than Outkast.
In a recent appearance on The Breakfast Club on Power 105, Dupri talked about his career, his work with Usher, and even came to the defense of Bow Wow, but the most interesting moment came when talking about Atlanta. Charlamagne The God asked whether Jermaine Dupri or Outkast moved the culture of Atlanta hip-hop forward more. Although Dupri claims it was him, he does make sure to differentiate the type of impact he had on hip-hop culture in general to the way Outkast impacted the art of rapping itself.
“Depending on what type of hip-hop you talking about, we come from two different places in hip-hop,” Dupri explains. “As far as culture, me. I brought people to Atlanta that had never seen Atlanta. I showed everybody in the world Magic City…I was the first person to start throwing money in the club. I had to pay for all the magazines to come to Atlanta…no one was paying attention to what’s going on," he continues. "As far as culture goes and having parties, bringing Puff, bringing Envy and Clue to Atlanta, that was all me."
