"SoundCloud rap" has become a loaded term in 2017, but its origins come from a real place. The streaming platform has consistently given birth to major rap stars in recent years and it has given a platform to aspiring artists all over the world.

Of course, the service isn't only for rappers. Artists of all genres upload their songs to SoundCloud every day. But at the time this story is published, the top 50 most popular songs list in America is wall-to-wall hip-hop, as Digital Music News points out. The breakdown is similar worldwide, as 49 out of the top 50 songs are rap songs—with Arabic pop artist Mahmoud El Esseily sitting at number 42.

Nielsen declared hip-hop the most popular genre in America back in July, and it seems to be getting bigger by the day—especially on services like SoundCloud.
