Pigeons & Planes' Best Songs of the Week

December is off to a strong start.

With so much good music steadily coming through, it's easy to miss some of the best. To help prevent this, we've rounded up the best new songs of the week. Here are the songs you can't afford to skip, in no particular order.

Miguel - "City of Angels"

Miguel

Another couple of years go by, and another Miguel album is released. On each subsequent album after 2010's All I Want You, Miguel has incorporated more and more variety in his music, expanding from his R&B roots with rock, funk, soul, and, as of 2015's Wildheart, an undeniable psychedelic edge.

The evolution continues on War & Leisure, which includes some of 2017's most exciting pop music. "City of Angels," which sits between the buoyant "Told You So" and the exceptionally fun funk of "Caramelo Duro," is one of the album's darker songs. Miguel sells the story he's telling with aplomb, and although this song might not end up on your mood-setting playlist, it's an important reminder that there's much more to Miguel than sexy R&B songs.—Alex Gardner

Mase - "The Oracle"

25 things camron relationship with mase

Didn't see this coming. The Mase versus Cam'ron beef has been brewing for years, and it continued when Cam'ron took jabs at Mase on "It's Killa" from his new project The Program. It was nothing new, but apparently Mase felt the timing was finally right to issue a quick response—and he went in. He borrowed the beat to the title track off Jay-Z's Blueprint 2 and in just over four minutes, he delivered one of the best diss tracks in recent memory. SiR ft. ScHoolboy Q - "Something Foreign"

SiR

Schoolboy Q singing R&B melodies? Can't say I saw this coming, but it works beautifully. Q is a guest of TDE's latest signee SiR, and the two artists open their hearts up over some piano and brush sticks produced by Saxon. It's one of two songs SiR released this week (here's the other), and while there's no word of an upcoming project, this is certainly a good sign. More promising news for fans of the Seven Sundays singer: he's opening for Miguel on the latter's 2018 tour.—Graham Corrigan

KWAYE - "Jasmine"

kwaye

London-based, Zimbabwe-born artist KWAYE first caught our attention back in May with his catchy single "Little Ones," and has been releasing captivating songs ever since. The singer has an alluring approach to pop and R&B that is sure to draw the ears of any Solange fans, but he's creating a space of his own.

His latest single "Jasmine" is an incredibly seductive and mesmerizing track that has the power to instantly put anyone under its spell. KWAYE's vocals are filled to the brim with raw emotion that translates without question into his music. If you're looking for a new song to add to your cuffing season soundtrack, this is it.—Adrienne Black

A2 ft. 6LACK - "Southern Comfort"

a2

British rapper A2 put down a marker in 2016 with "X2 (DBLE)" and now he's here with an 11-track EP called BLUE. It's a dark and moody project, and "Southern Comfort" with 6LACK is a standout. It's a slow-building track, but once the beat drops they both go in, with 6LACK flexing both his singing and rapping skills.

Xavier Omär & Sango - "Wonderful Christmastime"

Xavier Omar CMW 2017

Well folks, we've finally made it to December and the holiday spirit is swiftly creeping up on me. Every single year, the radio runs through the same playlist of holiday songs—classics that can start to feel tiresome before the month has even started. Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" is one of the rare holiday classics that I personally never get sick of.

But this year, Xavier Omär  and Sango delivered a real gift by taking the song and completely making it their own. Sango provides a subtly bouncy rhythm with just enough bells to complete the holiday vibe, while Xavier puts his own emotion and lovely touch on McCartney's original lyrics. The result is a refreshing update to a classic that I can add to my holiday playlist.—Adrienne Black

DRAM - "I Have a Dream"

From "Cha Cha" to "Broccoli" to "Cute," DRAM is one of the best at making fun, carefree, songs over beats that bump. "I Have a Dream" comes from the deluxe edition of DRAM's debut album Big Baby DRAM, out now alongside four more new songs. As well as dropping the periods from his name, DRAM's been hard at work recently, releasing new music with Trippie Redd and Playboi Carti, a Christmas EP with his mom, and performing at ComplexCon.

Maesu - "OG"

Maesu

Maesu is a 25-year-old artist from Alabama, and he's been making music for 10 years. Throughout the entire time, he was working jobs on the side while releasing songs and working with other artists, but in 2016 he finally took the jump and moved to Los Angeles. For the first time in 10 years, he also released a project. It's called the deSerVe EP, and the moody "OG" is the track we keep going back to.—Jacob Moore
