We're taking it back to the old days of P&P with this one. Things have changed a lot over the past few years, but SoundCloud is still a great place to find emerging artists, and rising producers have built an especially strong community on the platform. Many of the younger artists show support by re-posting each other's music, so if you follow a few producers on SoundCloud, there's a wealth of music to be discovered. That's how we came across a lot of this music, and we decided to highlight some of our favorite beats with recommendations on which rappers would pair well with the production.

Stööki Sound - "Endz"

pusha t prison reform psa

Who should do it: Pusha T

London producer duo Stööki Sound are masters of booming, ominous beats, and a snarling Pusha T verse would fit on "Endz" perfectly. It would take a commanding voice to not be overpowered by production this massive, but Pusha has proven time and time again that he can rise to the occasion. Eghck.

Vague001 - "VR Safehouse"

21 Savage Adidas

Who should do it: 21 Savage

Vague001's "VR Safehouse" might sound a little weird at first with all its production flourishes, but 21 Savage's no-frills style would be a strong compliment. The tempo is on-point, and it's easy to imagine 21 rapping over this brief and frequently silly beat. It's the perfect middle ground between his more severe, darker output, and the often celebratory approach found on his debut album, Issa.

Kiefer - "goodsignsruff v3"

J.I.D Dreamville

Who should do it: J.I.D

J.I.D dropped one of 2017's best albums so far with The Never Story, and he showcased one of the most technically impressive flows of all the newcomers in hip-hop. J.I.D doesn't need a flashy beat with a lot of bells and whistles to hold attention, and he'd probably body this jazzy, classic-sounding beat from Los Angeles producer Kiefer.

Poter Elvinger - "Ghosts"

Under Armour Signs ASAP Rocky

Who should do it: A$AP Rocky

A$AP Rocky sounds at home over classic New York production, but it's always interesting when he steps outside of his comfort zone. Actually, I don't know if A$AP Rocky has a comfort zone—he seems confident and comfortable in any situation, and his "Love$ick" collaboration with Mura Masa was totally unexpected but fucking great. British producer Poter Elvinger's "Ghosts" has a bit more of an edge to it, with dark undertones and ghostly vocals, but it's still catchy and accessible. And A$AP Rocky would probably sound sick on it.

Phoelix - "Heartless Sonata"

noname

Who should do it: Noname

This one's obvious. Phoelix was one of the executive producers behind Noname's incredible Telefone album, and the two have already proven that they work well together—you can read more about that here. "Heartless Sonata" is a laid back gem from Phoelix's recent GSPL EP, and it's perfect as is, but it's hard not to wonder what it would sound like with some Noname vocals on top.

Catch Noname on the Pigeons & Planes stage at ComplexCon in November. You can buy tickets here.

DJ Haydn - "GG16"

Ski Mask The Slump God

Who should do it: Ski Mask The Slump God

Ski Mask has come a long way from his days rapping over horror movie-influenced beats and noise-rap, proving his versatility time and time again. He's shown an appreciation for bouncier production as of late—and has been putting in work with Timbaland—and Swedish producer DJ Haydn is particularly good at colorful beats that fit that criteria. The cinematic "GG16" would provide a really interesting, slightly darker backdrop for Ski Mask and his off-kilter flow, especially as he looks to further challenge himself as a rapper.

Ski Mask The Slump God will be performing on the Pigeons & Planes stage at ComplexCon in November. Buy tickets here, and read more about Ski Mask here.

What So Not - "Adieu"

Trippie Redd 2017

Who should do it: Trippie Redd

Without any words, Australian producer What So Not's "Adieu" strikes an emotional chord that feels dreamlike and otherworldly. We've heard Trippie Redd's emotional, melody-driven wailing reach rockstar levels of charisma, but listening through all his music shows his range and ability to shift shapes to fit different moods and styles of production. We have no idea what he'd do over something like this, but it's unlike anything he's touched yet, and we'd love to hear it.

eugene cam - "fine"

Smino

Who should do it: Smino

This beat has some of the elements familiar to Smino: dynamic switch-ups, layered musicality, synths that are futuristic but still have a soulful feel. But whereas Smino is known more for riding fluttering hi-hats and laid back finger snaps, eugene cam's "fine" is a little more full-bodied, with some big, brassy moments and brawny bass. It still leaves plenty of space for Smino's complex flow, and you can imagine Smino flipping the switch into his athletic, tongue-twisting best when the beat changes from quiet to loud. These two St. Louis reps would sound awesome together.

Blank Body - "Bleed"

Yaeji Rachael Wright

Who should do it: Yaeji

While Seoul and NYC-based musician Yaeji isn't explicitly a rapper, she does know how to sound incredible over futuristic hip-hop style production. Whether she were to rap or sing over Blank Body's "Bleed" doesn't matter, all we know is that she'd sound excellent over something like this. It's one of his more low-key beats, and Yaeji's hushed delivery would definitely compliment Blank Body's IDM-inspired approach to rap production.

KVN AUST - "dictator"

Lil Pump

Who should do it: Lil Pump

At this point, the Lil Pump formula is clear, and it's working—he's even on the Billboard Hot 100 now. There's no reason to switch it up now, but it would be fun to put Pump over something a little more complex, and we could imagine him yell-rapping over KVN AUST's "dictator" for what would be one of the most triumphant anthems of the century.
