Honey Harper slid onto the scene last month with "Pharaoh," a heartsick country love song somewhere between the sonic schools of Devendra Banhart and Mazzy Star.
He's retained a lot of the same core elements for the second single—"Secret" makes the most of a pedal steel guitar and acoustic chords, but Harper's voice shows its breadth this time around. The mysterious singer jumps from a bassy verse to the falsetto-laden chorus with ease, driving home the song's bittersweet thesis: "It's hard to fall in love/When you don't know what it is."
Honey Harper's debut EP Universal Country is out November 10 on Arbutus Records. Pre-order here, and give "Secret" a listen below.
