Finally. Four and a half years after the release of their last project, Coexist, The xx are back with their third studio album, I See You.
Since sharing Coexist in 2012, a few things have changed for the trio. Jamie xx's profile as a solo artist has risen considerably with the success of his 2015 album, In Colour, and the group opened themselves up to incorporate his comparatively upbeat sound into their music.
"[In Colour] has definitely informed what we’re doing for the next xx album,” Jamie told NME last May. Or, as Romy Madley Croft explained to Beats 1's Julie Adenga, "We were like, let's just try stuff. Let's rip up the rulebook and have some fun with it [...] There's some more upbeat stuff on there. Hopefully, maybe, people will be able to dance to it, which is new for us."
Holing up in the small town of Marfa, Texas to record part of the album, the trio managed to stay on the same page as they added new elements to their famously hushed, spacious sound. "[We] felt unified," Oliver Sim told Zane Lowe on Beats 1 Radio Thursday night. "We were there together. When the session ended, it kind of didn't end because we were all together and we were still talking. It was nice to have that moment to come together."
The result is a gorgeous record that will satisfy fans of their previous material, while forging ahead in exciting new directions. We can't wait to hear this stuff in a live setting. Listen for yourself on Apple Music here and via Spotify below. Continue for video of their interview with Zane Lowe.
