There's no way around it: Father John Misty's new song "Pure Comedy" is weird.

Of course, life in 2017 is pretty fuckin' weird too, though. So this is fitting. Over a minimalist piano backdrop, Josh Tillman lays out a meandering critique of life as we know it—complete with bizarre visuals that include Pepe the Frog memes, Donald Trump, Kanye West, cuddly animals, and disaster footage. As he says at one point, life in 2017 is "like something that a madman would conceive."

Similar to his 2015 single, "Bored In The USA," Tillman isn't afraid of wrapping his dry, sarcastic style around pull-no-punches political commentary—setting his sights on the American way of life and Donald Trump's presidency: "Where did they find these goons they elected to rule them? What makes these clowns they idolize so remarkable?"
