Following the massive success of J. Cole's double platinum album 2014 Forest Hills Drive, news of a new project bubbled up from nowhere last week, along with a 40-minute documentary that shed some light on what he's been up to since 2014. The doc revealed he's focused his energy squarely on music, looking to make the most of the highest level of visibility his career has ever seen.

"I'm living a life that's very detached," he explained. "I'm not on social media, I'm not in the news, I don't click the headlines. It's just family and fuckin' music." Aware of the fleeting nature of success, he added, "You're never guaranteed to be this high again. So while I'm here, let me use this opportunity to say the realest shit I've ever said."

The documentary featured two songs, "Everybody Dies" and "False Prophets," which included lines that ruffled a few feathers and led to speculation that he was taking shots at fellow rappers including Kanye West, Drake, and Lil Yachty—but the tracks don't appear on the album. The ten song project is made up of all new material and, yes, it doesn't include any features.
