UPDATE: An anti-hate rally has been organized in response to the hate messages that defaced (and now restored) Adam "MCA" Yauch Memorial Park in Brooklyn. State Senator Daniel Squadron, Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez, City Councilmembers Stephen Levin and Brad Lander, and many others will be attending the event tomorrow, to be held at 11:30am. Read the official statement via Beastie Boys' Twitter below.
It's only been 10 days since Donald Trump was elected the 45th President of the United States, but even within that short space of time there has reportedly been an increase in hate crimes and examples of Neo-Nazi support.
One of the latest and saddest examples of this has been the desecration of the 'Adam Yauch Park' in Brooklyn, named after the Beastie Boys member who sadly passed away four years ago. Two swastikas and 'Go Trump' were spray-painted in the children's playground, causing understandable outrage from local residents. City Councilman Brad Lander tweeted a photo and directly linked the Nazi symbols with the President-Elect, saying, "Yet more hatred & anti-Semitism from Trump supporters.”
It is unknown whether the park was specifically targeted because of Adam Yauch's Jewish heritage, however, the news is troubling regardless. The former Beastie Boy was also a vocal supporter of feminism and spoke out against Islamaphobia at the 1998 MTV Music Awards.
