It might come as a surprise to many, but Japan has had a burgeoning grime scene for quite a few years now. The scene has been gradually picking up more attention over the years, especially with the recent international interest thanks to the likes of Skepta, Novelist, and Stormzy among others. Boiler Room has released a new Joe Alexander-directed documentary highlighting the Japanese grime scene in Tokyo, and it offers an interesting look at what grime can sound like almost 6000 miles removed from its birthplace.

Focusing on a few artists including Pakin, Chocola B, and Sakana among others, Full Circle: Grime In Japan shines a new light on the passionate but small scene. A lot of Japanese MCs have been fucking with 140 BPMs for longer than most fans of grime are aware of, and it's worth checking out despite the language barrier. For a real throwback on just how long the West and Far East have been blending sounds, revisit Devilman's 2013 collaboration with Pakin here.
