Alex Vargas Higher Love

Danish musician Alex Vargas is readying his debut album, but to call him a newcomer would be an understatement. Vargas has been making music since he was a kid, progressing to his own solo career in 2010. Since then, he's been consistently working and releasing music while simultaneously touring around the world. "When we're not on the road, we're in the studio or I'm working from home. It never really stops," he says of his hard work ethic.

"Higher Love" is the first single off his upcoming album, and it shows real growth in Vargas' sound. Still intact is his soulful voice and ghostly electro-R&B production but his songwriting feels fuller and more mature.

The track is about how predictability can foster insecurities in a relationship. "'Higher Love' speaks of doubts and insecurities that come from an irrational fear of routine, and then the realization that ultimately the two of you cannot be broken," he explains.

Vargas' debut album will be out early next year. For now, get a taste of what to expect by streaming "Higher Love" below.

You've been making music for a while, both in a band and solo. How did you get started in music? What sparked your interest?

I started singing in musicals as a kid back in Denmark. Eventually, I got a guitar and I just haven't stopped. My father is also a musician, so music has always been around me.

I hear a lot of growth in "Higher Love," from even the material you put out earlier this year. What's helped push you to take your writing to the next level?

Hard work I guess. Just before releasing the EP we started writing for the album. When we're not on the road we're in the studio or I'm working from home. It never really stops.

You've consistently been releasing music over the past few years, but you've also been touring constantly too. How do you balance the two? Does being in different cities help your creative process or is it hard to be on the road when you want to write?

To be honest, I do both. I'm currently working on a new song during every sound check on this tour and it evolves a bit every day.

Your live shows are always packed and include so many different elements between the visual effects and how many instruments you juggle throughout the performance. How important is it to you to bring this kind of experience to your fans? How has your live show progressed to get to this point?

It’s funny how it came about actually. We were offered a tour with our mates Bears Den and couldn’t afford taking a band on the road, but still wanted to do more than just play acoustic versions of our songs. Things just evolved from there and now we can’t imagine playing any other way. We added lasers, lights, and a ton of visual effects and now our front of house team (sound and light) have become an integral part of our live show. It's a group effort where their performance is just as important as ours.

Talk to us about the ideas behind "Higher Love." What inspired it?

I was in Vienna with a couple of friends writing for the sake of writing. "Higher Love" started as a dance/club type of track, and it wasn't until I sat and played it on my friend's piano that I grew completely attached to it. When I got back to London the song wasn't quite complete so Tommy [Sheen] and I finished the writing and pulled it into our world.

"Higher Love" speaks of doubts and insecurities that come from an irrational fear of routine, and then the realization that ultimately the two of you cannot be broken.

You just released an EP this past winter, but is there another one (or a full length) coming which "Higher Love" will be included on?

There is indeed an album coming. We are working on it while and in between touring.  We have joined forces on the production with our friend, Leggy Langdon, in California who is incredible and totally understands us. We call him our finisher. "Higher Love" was the first tune we did with him, and yes, it's going to be on the album!
