Mai Kino makes pop that never settles. An alternative strain of music at once sweet and sinister, “The Waves,” her last single, welded angsty synth brushstrokes with lyrics of rebirth. Today, she shares that song’s blue-toned visual, which she directed and produced herself. The Portuguese singer taps simplicity to spellbound viewers. Bodily contortion and unfazed, empty stares do more than a blurry of effects possibly could.

“‘The Waves’ talks about leaving a familiar albeit toxic womb, and allowing yourself to be born again,” Kino told us in an email. “The video is a visual metaphor for this, as I gradually come to life and swim up to the surface. It’s a little spiritual journey.”

It’s safe to say she achieved her ambitions. Watch Mai’s latest below, and keep an eye out for the promising vocalist in the near-future.
