As J Dilla's 2006 posthumous album The Shining turns 10, BBE Records (through which the album was originally released) has re-released The Shining as a 7" vinyl box set. To coincide with the release, Boiler Room has shared a never-before-heard mixtape by the prolific producer titled Back To The Crib.

The mixtape is believed to have been created sometime between mid-1999 and early 2000, and can be seen as an intimate look into what Dilla himself listened to at the time. Clocking in at over 46 minutes long, the tape includes the likes of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Hall & Oates, and many more.

In celebration of The Shining's re-release, Co-Founder of BBE Records Peter Adarkwah shared a personal anecdote of his first trip to Detroit.

"Towards the end of 1999 or early 2000, it was my first trip to Detroit. James (Yancey) was working with James Poyser on Erykah's 'Mama's Gun' LP. We'd checked out a couple of record stores (I can't recall where or their names) and this tape was playing in the car," says Adarkwah. "I recall Think Twice was on the tape and I suggested there and then that he do a cover with Erykah for the BBE album.

"We didn't get the Erykah feature, but people sure remember James' cover. We drove past a sign, it said Welcome To Detroit and I suggested that would be a good name for the album. When we pulled over James gave me the tape and said this is yours, or words to effect."

The Shining is available as a 7″ vinyl for the first time featuring both original and instrumental versions across ten discs, compiled into a box set. You can order the box set here.
