Later this month, Flying Lotus is set to debut his directorial debut, Royal. The short film has been selected to premiere at Sundance NEXT Fest on August 14 at the Theatre at Ace Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, and was made under his newly found alias of “Steve.” This is the first time Flying Lotus himself has ever stepped behind the camera, but considering the pedigree of his music videos and scores for short films, then Royal is something to be excited about indeed.

After scoring Eddie Alcazar’s horror FUCKKKYOUUU, the Shia LaBoeuf-produced documentary LoveTrue, and Tim & Eric’s remarkably disgusting short film The Terrys, Flying Lotus seems eager to score a film of his own. Sharing a clip from the film via Instagram, it appears to be just as delightfully twisted as one would expect. Featuring a lot of bodily fluids and rapid editing, Flying Lotus previous called the short film “an awkward love story that’s definitely not for the kiddies.” He was inspired to create the film after seeing a GIF of him on Thom Yorke that he found hilarious, but this seems far removed from said GIF.

Watch the preview for Royal below, and look out for an official wide release sometime later this year.
