Previous 5 On It entrant TOBi employs the sort of melodic rapping that’s undoubtedly familiar to anyone paying attention to modern hip-hop. On EP standouts “iNDECiSiONS,” Kweku Collins-featuring song “Don’t Wanna Think,” and the EP’s eponymous opener, he manages to pull off familiar style with personal flair and humor (“I’m fresh out the friend zone!” he declares on “FYi”).
“FYi is getting started on a musical journey,” says the 22-year-old TOBi. “I’ve been writing music and poetry since 8 years old as a fresh Nigerian immigrant, yet I still feel like a rookie. The anxiety, uncertainty and distant clouds are clearing up and I’m really liking where I’m at musically.”
At seven songs, FYi doesn’t outstay its welcome, cohesive in its sound and enjoyably raw, a concise body of work that leaves plentiful room for growth.
