Indiana rapper FLACO is not new to this. By his own count, he has been making music for “seven and a half fucking years.” He’s been putting in work and grinding to climb the ladder of a seemingly non-existent Indianapolis rap scene, and he’s done it all on his own.

“I didn’t know anybody. I didn’t know a guy who knew a guy who had a studio and all that shit,” FLACO says. “So I fell on my face figuring this out. I didn’t cut any corners. I had to earn everything.”

FLACO first started writing in college and soon realized that music was his only passion. From college textbooks to personal notebooks, his focus shifted completely to writing raps, and eventually he was kicked out of school.

“It’s been a grind. Couch surfing, sleeping on people’s floors. The rough shit that people don’t tell you about to keep doing this. There’s been a lot of failing to finally get to this point, and I’m not even shit, that’s the thing.”

GUNSFORGIRLS marks what FLACO says is his 20th project, but he’s not treating this as some sort of monumental occasion. This is just another chapter in the book of FLACO.

GUNSFORGIRLS is just a compilation of music that I’ve made in that period of time. It’s nothing more, it’s nothing less. It’s not some huge conceptual thing. It’s me experimenting with my flows and my cadences, and making the music I want to hear.”

“I ain’t do this shit for you,” FLACO sings to us on “Untouchable,” and after listening to GUNSFORGIRLS, that sentiment is obvious. FLACO is having fun with this, all on his own terms.

“Every song they play, I want them to go, ‘I don’t know what the fuck he’s going to do next. I don’t know what his flow is going to be on the next song. I don’t know what beat he’s going to pick.’ That’s what I wanted and that’s the feeling of this tape. Random cohesiveness, if that makes any fucking sense.”

And that’s exactly what we get. GUNSFORGIRLS bounces around just like FLACO’s flow on “New Things.” His hooks are extremely catchy, and when he gets down to spitting bars, his flow is one of a kind. There are 16 tracks on GUNSFORGIRLS, and no two are alike. From serenading us on “Untouchable,” to starting a riot with “Schmoke,” to the brutally honest “Sum Time.” We get a little bit of everything.

“Sometimes I really fucking hate myself, sometimes I smoke this dope until I melt, sometimes I don’t want to ask for help,” FLACO raps on “Sum Time.”

“It sounds random but has it’s own fluidity that I can’t explain,” FLACO says. Stream GUNSFORGIRLS below and hear for yourself.
