Shura Gets Nostalgic For "What's It Gonna Be?" Video

Shura flips the expectations of school girl crushes for her latest video.

Last week Shura returned with “What’s It Gonna Be?”—another single from her forthcoming debut album, Nothing’s Real—which is due out on July 8. From the first listen, it’s easy to pinpoint the ’80s-inspiration within the rhythm and production. Because of that, it only makes sense that Shura would deliver pairing visuals that are just as nostalgic.

For the video, Shura takes a well-known concept of having a secret crush on a popular kid at school but being too shy to go for it. However, the ending of this love story doesn’t end in the typical way many may expect.

“‘What’s It Gonna Be?’ is about having a massive crush on someone, so it made sense to go back where to school, where it all began,” Shura explains. “But it was important for us to explore those archetypal characters—The Jock, The Nerd, The Dork, The Popular Kid—and then flip expectations. ‘What’s It Gonna Be?’ is based on my personal experience as a kid; thinking you’re in love but then realizing that’s maybe just because you feel you should be (and ending up with someone totally unexpected).”
