It may still feel like a dream for many, but Australian group The Avalanches have finally returned, and they’re releasing their first album in over 15 years next month. With only one officially released single since they announced their long-awaited return, it’s been difficult waiting to hear more from the elusive group. Following the release of “Frankie Sinatra” featuring DOOM and Danny Brown, a Toro y Moi collaboration surfaced before quickly disappearing.
Now another track from forthcoming album, Wildflower, has been officially released. Featuring vocals from Mercury Rev’s Jonathan Donahue, “Colours” is classic Avalanches through and through. Featuring that deeply textural psychedelic sound they’re known for, “Colours” is triumphant in a way only The Avalanches could achieve. When the track really hits its stride, things pick up considerably, with the manipulated vocals layering wonderfully atop the floral backdrop.
The track is far removed from the bombastic, hard to follow “Frankie Sinatra,” showing that The Avalanches are still capable of providing that much needed variety. The album is set to feature a number of collaborations that stand as a testament to that sense of audio exploration, with appearances from the likes of Father John Misty and Biz Markie among others.
