Kill J is one of our favorite rising pop artists, and the Danish singer’s latest move is a collaboration with her fellow countryman Sekuoia. The producer is working on his debut album, flac, set for release later this year via French label Nowadays Records, and the two talents combine beautifully on “Lamp In The Dark.”

The single is a smooth blend of the two artist’s styles—Kill J’s memorable vocals floating over the spacey but sensual beat. “I think the process was one of the most collaborative things I’ve done, which was really exciting,” Sekuoia explains. “Julie [Kill J] had some really good input regarding the production, and I had a bit of input towards some vocal aspects. So to me it was an ideal way to collab.”

Although the production is dreamy, the song’s lyrics are far from cheerful. “It’s a song about being ripped apart by unreciprocated love,” Kill J tells us. “Like a flag in a storm, having no choice but to hold on to the hope of relief. I used to be so wanted I’d be like a lamp in the dark. They would all flock around me to give me their love. And I didn’t want it. Now the tables have turned and I’m on the receiving end and its agony—just waiting for my heart to grow cold.”

“Lamp In The Dark” is out May 27, with Sekuoia’s album to follow.
