Los Angeles native Leven Kali is preparing to release a new project by the end of this summer. Before doing so, Kali delivers a short preview of what we can expect from it with his new single “Root of Evil.”

As the old saying goes, “Money is the root of all evil,” and it can make people do something questionable things. Kali links up with Atlanta-based producer and artist Brandon Thomas to create a groovy single on the subject. “Root of Evil” opens up sounding very dark and dramatic but less than thirty seconds in, the production does a complete flip into a lighthearted beat that feels inviting.

Kali and Thomas create a sound that feels both familiar and completely new. “I’m working on making my own sound for LA. A different sound, but something that still feels nostalgic,” says Kali. “Brandon is doing the same with ATL. Little do people know, he does literally all kinds of music. This track rings true to me and I love it. I’m excited for people to hear it and hopefully it opens some eyes and minds to the ATL/LA connection as well.”

Though the track feels fun and will make any listener want to move, there’s some depth and an important message to it. “This record really means a lot to me. I believe its one of the realest verses I’ve written in a while,” Thomas explained via email. “Basically speaking about how no matter how many riches and wealth we acquire, we’ll still always lust for more. I feel like it’s because the power of money is predisposed to being the root of all evil. It keeps us all slaves as long as we don’t see that it’s way bigger than the money and the lifestyle—it’s about love and peace.”
