In an excellent New York Times feature about the future of music, Syd Tha Kyd opens up about her sexuality, her time in Odd Future, and her decision to leave the group and move on with The Internet.
In the piece, Syd explains: “The gay community hated me for being part of Odd Future. They thought Odd Future was homophobic because they tend to use homophobic slang, and they were like: ‘How can you work for and support homophobes?’ But they aren’t homophobic; they just don’t really care whether you’re offended or not.”
She also explains that during her time with Odd Future, she struggled with depression and being away from family and her girlfriend at the time. “I couldn’t talk to any of [the other Odd Future members] about it,” she says. “We weren’t all that close, and they never seemed to want to hear it.”
When she broke the news that she no longer wanted to be a member of Odd Future, it didn’t go very well. “They weren’t happy about it. I was their get-out-of-jail-free card. It’s easy to say they aren’t homophobic because Syd is there.”
Today, things are cool between Odd Future and Syd. Tyler, The Creator says “she went with her gut, and it worked out,” and he’s vocal about how proud he is of her success with The Internet.
