The Rolling Stones founding member Keith Richards has been particularly outspoken recently, making some big statements about legendary albums and entire genres in some cases. He’s referred to Black Sabbath and Metallica as “great jokes” and called Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band “rubbish,” and now in an interview with TimeOut London, he’s criticized artists that have worked with other songwriters.
When talking about Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” the topic of huge artists “like Adele and Rihanna” using numerous songwriters came up, and Keith responded bluntly, saying, “Well, they can’t rely on themselves, can they?” He went on to be fairly critical of where music is at these days in general, saying, “It goes round in cycles. We’re in the midst of a heavy-duty “showbiz” period, even stronger than when we killed it last time.”
He added, “‘The X Factor’ and all this competition shit. It’s just for people who want to be famous. Well, if it’s fame you want, good luck. You’d better learn to live with it.” While his comments aren’t quite as inflammatory as when he called fans of hip-hop “tone-deaf,” Keith’s latest comments will surely hit a nerve with certain artists and listeners alike.
