Chester Watson is influenced by Earl Sweatshirt, Tyler, the Creator, DOOM, and Mos Def, but in an interview with Red Bull he explained that his main inspiration is “just being a kid. Adults don’t really know how to harness being a kid. And that’s what people like. There’s something about being adolescent—you can’t remake it. I think I can capture it so well because I’m still 17.”

Past Cloaks should sit well with fans of Earl or DOOM—it’s dusty, smart, jazzy, dense, and technically sound. But it’s the youthful nature of Chester Watson that makes him so compelling as an artist. The songs were recorded when the Florida rapper was 15, 16, and 17, and it’s that underage attitude that shines through. He doesn’t ever say this, but it’s like, “Fuck what you think. I don’t care what you think. This is what I’m doing, and I like it.”

Sometimes, young rappers are too concerned with following the trends, capitalizing on what’s hot, and reacting according to what’s directly around them. Chester Watson is taking a different route, and it’s paying off. Past Cloaks is a slightly faded snapshot of what this prolific young artist is all about.
