Best New Mixes Streaming Right Now

Valentine's is a distant memory for almost everyone by now, but like a figurative box of chocolates, we've got a collection of mixes that you can enjoy in their entirety, without feeling the shame of tearing through a huge heart-shaped box of chocolates you bought on offer the week after Valentine's.

Whilst there are tender moments in the form of Flying Lotus' tribute mix to J Dilla, or Gilles Peterson's to Maurice White, there's much to make you smile in these and others, including two Valentine's mixes done correct by Hudson Mohawke and The Heatwave, plus a bunch more that'll cause some heavy breathing, will increase heart-rates, and at best, we hope you'll like.

2. Gilles Peterson: In Memory of Maurice White Mix

One of today's great selectors, Gilles Peterson put together a mix to pay respect to a man who's music has been described by many as magic; Maurice White, who sadly passed away just over two weeks ago. "He left us an incredible treasure trove of music that has shaped the way I live my life! I avoided the really obvious hits that you can hear everywhere and went for my personal faves, and a solid dose of the music that went on to shape the unique sound of Earth Wind and Fire from his early years working with two great mentors to him, Ramsey Lewis and Charles Stepney. I got so much pleasure recording this - I hope you enjoy as much as I did!"

3. Justin Jay: Fantastic Voyage House Party Mix

There are mixes that work well at parties, and there are some mixes that evoke the house party playlist to such a point that you can visualise the furniture and carpet being destroyed from people dancing on them. This mix from Justin Jay is the latter.

Dirtybird affiliate and evident partystarter Jay plays a medley of music that goes from party classics such as "Professional Widow" and "Whoomp, There It Is," and continues to delve into various, delicious denominations of house. Grab a pirate hat a pass a beer—lets party!

4. Hudson Mohawke: Valentines Slow Jams Chapter 9

For the ninth year in a row, Hudson Mohawke's Valentines "Slow Jams" mix has been welcomed by happy couples and lonely singletons (and vice versa) with open arms. An assemblage of heartfelt hits, this year the constantly impressive Kanye collaborator and Warp signee decided to focus on music made in the home isles.

"This year's a UK special. All UK: Eternal, Factory, Yaz etc.. Something brand new in there too."

5. Sammy Bananas: Orange Mix

"70 mins of fresh squeezed funk for dat fanny. The overdue 3rd installment in my fruit mix series. Tracklist to be posted in 2 weeks. Orange you glad I didn't say Banana??" bursts the brief description from Sammy Bananas. Prepare for some disco juiciness, saxophone funk, extra pulp, and one of those little umbella things.

6. Flying Lotus: J Dilla Mix for Dublab (02.10.06)

In case you missed it, many recently re-shared a mix recorded by Flying Lotus the day J Dilla passed away in 2006. There's probably little we need to say, other than that this was, and is, a tocuhing tribute from one true talent to another that's too good to sleep on...and that Dilla is forever.

7. Curses: "Galaxy Disco" Mix for Holy Ship!

Recorded live aboard this year's Holy Ship! in January, Curses' set from the floating festival features many-a-cut of fine disco and was recently made available for all to enjoy. Be sure to keep an eye out for more mixes rising to the surface, following the February voyage and the shenanigans recorded therein.

8. The Heatwave: Valentines Mix 2016

Dutty wine with the one you love, and give this mix made by The Heatwave with Valentines in mind a spin. Less Al Green and Minnie Ripperton, and more Mavado and Vybz Kartel, this mix, as described by the lads, is an X-rated affair, so make sure your boss, mother or local priest are nowhere near.

9. Tessela: Mix for Rinse FM

One of two Tessela sessions for Rinse FM to have come across our line of sight over the last couple of weeks, and this one is our favorite. Full of breakneck breaks, old-school piano house, and some pretty weird territory that's putting those on the quest for track ID's to task. Although, you can definitely expect some new productions from Tessela himself in there.

10. Funkineven & Jay Daniel: The Apron Show on NTS Radio

As if it wouldn't become apparent upon listening, Funkineven has shared the following, with simply "WILD MIX" in the description. You'll probably be happy to hear that he was joined by his brother in beats Jay Daniel for a back-to-back on the latest of The Apron Show on NTS Radio. Slow, purped excerpts progresses into funk-filled party starters, and as mentioned before, things get wild.

11. K-Lone (Wisdom Teeth): "CRACK N' GUN$ UKG" Mix for Berceuse Heroique

Like tuning into a solid pirate station back in the day except this time with the sound quality of digital radio, this mix by K-Lone shared via Berceuse Heroique is bang on.

The Bristolian label founder does well to bring back memories of a time when Rinse and Kiss were both still functioning on the sly, and songs like these were hard to come by on vinyl unless you knew a guy.

Original pirate material.
