Yesterday, after a few hiccups, Kanye West uploaded his new song “Real Friends” on SoundCloud. It’s a powerfully honest song from ‘Ye, and one that was immediately met with fanfare and media coverage.

“Real Friends” is an inspiring piece of music, but it helped out one young artist in a very quantitative way. 18-year-old Kansas City, Missouri rapper/producer Rory Fresco (who was recently featured in an edition of our 5 On It) dropped a song called “Lowkey” last week, and for whatever reason, SoundCloud’s algorithm picked this song to be the next song played after Kanye’s “Real Friends” finished. As a result, the song went from 5,000 plays to over 150,000 in less than 24 hours.

“I have no idea how this happened,” Fresco wrote via email. “It was random. Had no idea it would grow to this. I got girls from middle school hitting me up lmao. I’m a huge fan of Kanye and also Cudi… I’m inspired. I just wanna show the world more of my creations from my bedroom in the basement.”

The song is now second in line after Kanye’s track, with a TDE mix taking over the directly next spot, but this big placement has already made an impact—”Lowkey” currently has 158,000 plays, and the response to his song from new fans all over the world has been overwhelmingly positive.

Rory Fresco is prepping his debut release, Hollywood Rebel, and you can hear more of his music on SoundCloud. Check out “Lowkey” below.
