London-based, Zimbabwe-born Rationale’s debut EP Fuel To The Fire was a poppy but poignant effort that had as many moments of despair and self-reflection as it did memorable hooks. Today, Rationale is back with his most upbeat track to date, “Something For Nothing.”

The rich, organic production is still rooted in the past, in timeless pop traditions, and Rationale makes his reference points explicit in a note shared with the new song.

“’Something for Nothing’ is a groove based disco tinged love song written about someone I know,” he explains. “I was listening to a lot of Prince and watching Marvin Gaye/ Quincy Jones documentaries around the time I wrote it. I’m a big bass-line fan so when I wrote this one, I knew exactly where I wanted to take it.”

Listen to “Something For Nothing” below, and if you’re London-based catch Rationale headlining Village Underground on April 7.
