Missy Elliott recently sat down with Pharrell and Scott Vener for their Beats 1 show OTHERtone. Before the full interview airs this Sunday, a few clips were shared to preview topics that the trio touched on during their long conversation. In this episode, Missy discussed how Puff Daddy’s influence, working with Pharrell and her impact on artists who followed her.

Missy opened up by sharing the story of how Puff encouraged her to get back into rapping earlier in her career when she had plans to stick to just working on music in the background. Admitting that she had wanted to have her own label, write and produce records but Puff asking her to get on a song changed that path for the better. She goes on to explain how she began working with Pharrell on her more recent music.

While fans have been eager for Missy Elliott’s return, she admitted that she didn’t want to conform and not be true to herself. “I don’t want to do something because it’s trendy and it don’t work,” said Missy. “But if I’m true to myself, then I’m able to sleep at night if it don’t work.
