Hoodchella is an underground music festival that takes place in Los Angeles in April the weekend before a much bigger festival with a similar name takes place in Indio, California and they are not too happy about it. Coachella is suing Hoodchella “claiming the indie fest infringes on Coachella’s trademarks, creates unfair competition and dilutes their brand,” Rolling Stone reports.
In the lawsuit Coachella wants $100,000 and for Hoodchella to get rid of their name. The smaller festival started out as a one-day event last year and is expanding to a more traditional three-day festival this year.
Goldenvoice, the organizers behind Coachella, are fine with Hoodchella organizer Kamil Al-Ahdali wanting to hold a music festival, but are obviously not happy with the name saying, “Plaintiffs have no objection to Al-Ahdali’s holding a music festival; but Al-Ahdali has ignored repeated requests from plaintiffs to adopt his own distinctive festival name.”
This year’s Hoodchella’s tickets have recently gone on sale but the location of the festival has yet to be determined taking place in a secret Los Angeles spot. They argue their name is justified explaining what Hoodchella is all about: “a completely independent supporting independent art & artist from around the world and overall engaging the Underground community & keeping the culture alive.”
A Change.org petition is up for people who believe Hoodchella should not have to change their name stating: “It’s clear that our fan base knows we are two completely different establishments being that we already gained a fan base from our past underground art and music shows.”
