Gender inequality has been present in the music industry for as long as the music industry has existed, but the conversation is front and center as of late. More and more artists are stepping up and speaking out, and the norms are being challenged on a regular basis. In our interview with Danish artist Kill J, published today, she stated that she had never really had an issue with gender inequality until she entered the music business. Grimes, who just released Art Angels, has also been open about her experiences with being a woman in the music industry.

In Sky Ferreira’s latest Instagram note, she condemns the negativity that comes with the treatment of women in music and with the internet in general: “I guess my existence/value is strictly based off of as my appearance lol. It’s pretty petty and shitty that I’m supposed to be okay with being called a bitch or a slut or torn apart on my appearance daily.”

She goes on to say that artists shouldn’t have to deal with that kind of bullshit. “Our job is to simply create stuff. All of the negative disgusting bullshit some of you write makes it really difficult for others/positivity to shine. It’s dumb & unnecessary.”
