Over the past two years, Memphis’ Mulherin brothers have honed a sophisticated R&B sensibility that feels far more indebted to some of the gentlemen of the ’90s than the genre’s prevailing popular Lotharios. Like a loving, uptempo lullaby, “Take Two” is their most impressive release yet, sharply written and ambitious in its construction and production. Its beat constantly shifts without ever feeling restless, combining familiar structure with variety and fragmentation more akin to James Blake than James Fauntleroy. “Take Two” succeeds on a combination of restraint and warmth, a beautiful salve for a faltering relationship.
