Grimes took over SeriusXMU and discussed the narrative of her career among other things with Chairlift’s Caroline Polachek, and Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss. Polachek recalled her first support tour as an opening act for Ariel Pink, who Grimes is not fond of. “I was obessed with Ariel, like his music at the time, not the person,” Polachek told the group. “They were not very nice to us,” she said explaining how Ariel teased Polachek for doing vocal warm ups before Chairlift’s set. At the end of their tour together Ariel apologized to her for the teasing and explained his mocking was his way of trying to figure out how to do vocal warm ups.
When asked if her track “California,” off the excellent recently released Art Angels, is an ode to the state Grimes responded, “It’s actually like a hate track for Pitchfork. Not for California, for like the music industry.” Grimes explained her frustration for how the press handled the release of her song “Go.”
The girls also discussed how Grimes met Janelle Monáe, who appears on the Art Angels cut “Venus Fly,” being attacked for making pop music, and Krauss singing in wedding bands when she was in college. Listen to clips of their conversation below.
