The term “keeping it real” has always held weight in rap, but with the rise of the internet and the spread of hip-hop to all corners of the globe, the gap between the music and reality is often surprisingly wide. There are a lot of imitators, mimicking what they hear and fabricating an image. Not DP.

Listen to the 21-year-old Virginia rapper’s music and you’ll hear dark tales, slick wordplay, vivid imagery, and the confidence of a young artist who isn’t afraid to get confrontational. His sound is raw and gritty, and his personality matches it. He’s not a big talker, but despite his soft-spoken nature, he’s quick to snap. We saw this on the second day of shooting for this video, when a New York City crackhead pulled a knife on DP and shit almost hit the fan. Eventually, the crackhead realized what he was up against and walked away.

DP is open about his troubled past, but he’s focused on rapping now, and it’s paying off. He’s signed to 300, and his project Designer Casket is on the way. Get familiar.
