Motörhead and Radiohead are two of England’s most famous rock bands, but their music is worlds apart. While Motörhead have continued to use their admittedly successful formula album after album ever since their debut, Radiohead have made a name for themselves thanks to their commitment to evolving with each successive release. Like them or not, it’s pretty much impossible to refer to Radiohead as derivative.
Speaking with Consequence of Sound, Motörhead’s iconic frontman Lemmy agreed, but didn’t think that their tendency for reinvention leads to particularly good music. Upon being asked about the issues of stagnation and bands like Radiohead changing their sound with every album, Lemmy said, “And they’re not very good.” Pressing further, the interviewer asked, “Not a Radiohead fan?,” to which Lemmy blunty responded, “No.”
Lemmy did admit that Motörhead’s own music is getting a little “samey,” but he didn’t see that as an issue. “A lot of the albums sound the same,” he said, before adding, “They’re not, you know, but the sound is generally.” While a little confusing and contradictory, at least he can spot Motörhead’s own faults. It work seem the only thing that Motörhead’s Lemmy and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke have in common is the second part of their band names, go figure.
