In 2015, there’s an abundance of young hip-hop artists who mix rapping and singing. Melody has become an integral part of even the hardest street rap, but few are as competent as Memphis’ Jon Waltz. We’ve heard his singing on choruses in the past, and “Anna” is his most melodic to date. The song plays out like a series of hooks, showing not only his singing ability, but his knack for songwriting and structure. Production by Romil.
Waltz is planning to drop his Anna EP in November. Speaking on the project to Hypetrak, he explained, “If you were born in the 90’s and grew up listening to Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, JoJo, Pharrell, people like that, it’s all those influences that a kid who was 10 in 2005 would see on MTV, all in an album.”
