Chilly Gonzales is Canadian musician who has worked with everyone from Daft Punk to Drake, and he really knows his pop songs. On YouTube, Gonzales runs a series titled Pop Music Masterclass, in which he deconstructs big pop songs and looks at everything going on in said songs. In a recent episode, Gonzales deconstructed Hozier’s mammoth hit “Take Me To Church,” and came to the conclusion it ripped off Feist’s “How Come You Never Go There.” Hozier is none to happy with Gonzales comments, and has filed a defamation suit against him in Ireland’s High Court.
The Sunday Times reports that Hozier, aka Andrew Hozier-Byrne, is planning to sue Gonzales for the video, which has since been removed from YouTube. Hozier’s manager has said that the claims were “groundless.” In the original Pop Music Masterclass video with Gonzales, he said, “I’m being told by the research staff that Feist’s track came out well over a year before Hozier’s. Doesn’t look so good does it? ‘Take Me To Church’? Maybe Feist should take him to court.”
Gonzales has yet to comment on the case yet, but it is important to note that the video has been removed from YouTube. Feist has yet to comment on the matter, too. Watch Gonzales’ Pop Music Masterclass series here.
