Enigmatic singer/producer shy youth’s new EP Out Here filters a taste for ’80s synths through soft focus, gauzy textures and disjoint vocals giving sparkling life to each song. If that recipe sounds a bit too ready-made for SoundCloud surfing, its execution avoids some of the usual pitfalls of ethereal, loosely structured online finds. “Future Future” and “Light Shows” showcase shy youth’s formula at its best, pretty and built around repeated phrases and melodies more than traditional form. Easily digestible, but densely layered enough for satisfying repeat visits, Out Here smartly straddles the line between atmosphere and intricate detail.
