The Best New Mixes Streaming Right Now

The best of the best, from dance music to hip-hop, and even some '80s soul.

August can tend to present pockets of free time, ideal for staring at the sky with friends or for getting a head start on Christmas shopping, depending on how you're inclined. But whatever you chose to do, we've got a soundtrack to accompany it.

Say you're in need of a five-hour session fueled by the seaside vibes of Croatia's Soundwave Festival, you'd be in luck, because Mr Scruff posted one up not long ago, which also featured Alexander Nut, Fatima, and Chunky on duty. Is hip-hop more your thing? Because DJ Spinna did his thing. Breakbeat Lou also brought the big ones out for a Best Of 45s, broadcast via Stones Throw, and Zed Bias did a similar thing with a throwback '80s Street Soul Selection mix.

All these and more in store for you and yours; read on and listen up for hours and hours of music in our latest list of best mixes.

2. Christian Rich: Fader Mix + FW 14

Grammy-nominated twin brothers Taiwo and Kehinde Hassan aka Christian Rich have come out swinging over the last week or two, with a full stream of their new record FW 14 and a fire mix for Fader respectively being made available for your enjoyment.

"Tai came up with this concept to mix rare J Dilla records and rare Timbaland records. I think people will probably stop whatever they are doing to comprehend the mix. Once it has been digested, this will be great working music." Taiwo elaborated, "I think people will be working out at the gym or designing while listening to this. We made this mix to be soothing and nostalgic. Some people might do erotic things to this. Who knows?" See where this mix and/or the album sits for you on that spectrum.

3. Four Tet: Dekmantel Podcast #32

Any new Four Tet mix should go straight to the top of your to listen list, but this one is extra special. It's a two hour mix live and direct from Dekmantel festival in Netherlands, and it sees Mr. Hebden doing what he does best—digging deep into his crates and mixing disparate genres smoothly and seamlessly. Plus, it's a free download, so grab that now and treasure it forever.

4. Deadboy, Brackles, Shandy & MC Kie: Crazylegs Mix for Radar Radio

Presenting their new show on Radar Radio, the Crazylegs label let rip on a UKG tip with the help of Deadboy, Brackles, Shandy, and veteran of the scene, MC Kie. "This one was a garage special... We were blessed to be joined by garage royalty MC Kie, who rolled thru with a bottle of sambuca, as you do."

5. 1080p: Demo Prophet 2015 Survey Mix

Canadian cassette/digital label 1080pツ posted a dope mix up yesterday, instantly making us pretty excited for what's to come over the next few months from their camp.

"All new 1080p tracks—demos and rough cuts and direct takes from upcoming cassettes and 12"s" feature; tracks from Co La, tracks missing details in the tracklisting, and someone called Kirk The Flirt. Perfect music to wander through the weird side of the internet while listening to.

6. Distal: Reconstrvct XXIII

"Big fat shout to the ATLien Distal for making the journey to the smelliest part of Brooklyn and not being stingy about letting us share this relentless set," reads the message from the guys at Reconstrvct after their Fourth of July/Fourth Anniversary party last month. Also celebrating their ten-year anniversary was Tectonic Records, with Rabit, Pinch, and Logos all playing. And after listening, here's hoping those guys are also feeling generous about sharing their mixes too.

7. Mr Scruff, Alexander Nut, Fatima & Chunky: 5-hour b2b Mix for Soundwave Croatia 2015

From sources we had at the Croatia's Soundwave festival the other week, this back-to-back between Mr Scruff, Alexander Nut, Fatima & Chunky was a cracking way to spend five hours in the sun. Listen back to the litany of genres shaken, stirred, and served over ice in a plastic cup with a pineapple wedge, and let this be a little incentive for anyone who may already be planning to go to next year's event.

8. Chief: Mix for Soul Circle Radio

Swiss producer and label boss, the aptly-named Chief concocted a superchill mix for the people at Soul Circle Radio, spanning the sort of music that always seems to make us happy: Dilla, Flying Lotus, Madlib, Busta Rhymes, The Isley Brothers etc etc.. But hey, if you aren't into blunted/blissed-out hip hop, we're not going to bother convincing you otherwise because that'd be valuable joint rolling time being wasted.

9. Zed Bias: '80s Street Soul Selection

Known around many a British neighbourhood, the last name in bass heavy club records (alphabetically) is Zed Bias, but the club in this instance is more something you would've likely heard on a Friday night at The Viper Room in Los Angeles.

"I went for a dip in the vaults recently and put together this sunshine mix of 80's Street Soul.. No tracklist. Feel free to have a go. If you know you know!"

10. Throwing Snow: Mix for Gilles Peterson Worldwide

Champion of interesting music and musicians alike, Gilles Peterson made producer-slash-DJ Throwing Snow take to the decks to deliver a top notch clutch of songs from all over.

With a sound which GP attempts to place, and effectively throughout the mix, Throwing Snow is described as having "traversed along the electronic spectrum from footwork and jungle, to drone and post-rock, rave, house and techno, never straying far from a melodic backbone." Sounds brilliant to us.

11. BreakBeat Lou: 'Ultimate 45s' Mix for Stones Throw Podcast 93

Ahead of his debut dates in the UK supporting Peanut Butter Wolf, including a performance at Banksy's Dismaland this Friday, Louis Flores aka BreakBeat Lou—creator of Street Beat Records' Ultimate Breaks and Beats compilation series—bundled together the best of his 45s to create an audible curation of funk, soul, psychedelia, and breaks that hit like a punch to the face. With some recognisable cuts as well as a bunch that may be new to you, anyone that can make it out to see Lou on his first foray across the pond with PBW can safely expect to hear similar sorts of things.
