While Drake and Meek Mill are going back and forth with their memes and wedgie threats, Keith Richards is casually stirring up some beef that been stewing for more than 40 years. In a recent interview with Esquire, Richards admits that he still thinks The Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is “rubbish.”
When the interviewer explained that in the past twenty years, he found himself always leaning more towards the Rolling Stones’ music, Richards explained the reasoning behind that feeling. “The Beatles sounded great when they were the Beatles,” said Richards. “But there’s not a lot of roots in that music. I think they got carried away.”
Further explaining that in that era it was easy for bands to get carried away or distracted by all the screaming girls and forget what they initially wanted to do. “The Beatles, those chicks wore those guys out. They stopped touring in 1966—they were done already. They were ready to go to India and shit.”
But unlike other scenarios that some would consider real beef, Keith Richards is humble enough to take a jab at himself as he simultaneously takes a jab at The Beatles. “You’re starting to do Sgt. Pepper. Some people think it’s a genius album, but I think it’s a mishmash of rubbish, kind of like Satanic Majesties“—the Stones album from 1967. Completing the bold statement with, “‘Oh, if you can make a load of shit, so can we.'”
