After CHVRCHES’ new “Leave a Trace” video dropped, a 4chan thread took aim at lead singer Lauren Mayberry. One of the first comments was, “Gonna jack off to this later thanks,” and the conversation continued down that path. Some kept on relentlessly objectifying Mayberry, and others began to blame the band for intentionally playing up her sexuality instead of featuring the other two male members.

The Scottish singer has addressed offensive online comments before, and after this thread was brought to her attention, she responded on Twitter. “Dear anyone who thinks misogyny isn’t real. It is and this is what it looks like,” she tweeted along with a link to the thread. The official CHVRCHES Twitter account also stepped in, tweeting, “PSA: apparently wet hair makes you a ‘slut.’ Nice work, 4chan / humanity.”

In 2013, Mayberry wrote about online misogyny for The Guardian. “I absolutely accept that in this industry there is comment and criticism,” she explained. “What I do not accept, however, is that it is all right for people to make comments ranging from ‘a bit sexist but generally harmless’ to openly sexually aggressive. That it is something that ‘just happens.’ Is the casual objectification of women so commonplace that we should all just suck it up, roll over and accept defeat? I hope not. Objectification, whatever its form, is not something anyone should have to ‘just deal with.'”
